Fans of cold-case crime TV shows will be aware of the wonders of DNA. But there’s a lot more it can be used for than tracking down criminals. For instance, knowing your unique genetic code could help you optimise your own health.
Exploring your DNA can be as quick and easy as swabbing your cheek in your own living room, so it’s no wonder home kits are so popular. In fact, around one in 20 Brits have used one, and 8% of them have done so purely to find out about their likelihood of developing certain diseases.*
‘DNA tests have been available for a while now,’ says Emma Beswick, director of Life code Gx. ‘And, due to advances in technology, tests are more affordable than ever.’
As well as helping to trace distant relatives, DNA tests can also solve health niggles in seconds. ‘Knowing your DNA can help you get to the root cause of problems, such as headaches, weight gain, low energy and, anxiety – then fix it,’ says Emma. ‘Sometimes it might be quick and easy – like removing a food group or toxin you’re reacting to.’

What is DNA?
Short for deoxyribonucleic acid, DNA is your unique biological blueprint. ‘We get half our DNA from our mother and half from our father,’ explains Avi Lasarow, CEO at Prenetics International. ‘Knowing information about your body helps individuals make decisions to prevent health issues.’
