Botanical Name : Equisetum hyemale Linn.

Common name : English: Scouringrush; French: Prele; German: Winter Schachtelhalm.
Habitat : U.S.A. Equisetum hyemale is native temperate Asia, North America, South America and Europe.
General Introduction : Equisetum species are divided into two subgenera : Equisetum, with eight species and Hippochaete with seven species. Although the chromosome number (n = 108) is the same for all Equisetum species, the subgenus Hippochaete has larger chromosomes than those of subgenus Equisetum. The subgenus Hippochaete includes the Equisetum species often called “scouring rushes” (although also known generally as horsetail) because of their rough, silica – impregnated epidermis. The seven species in this group are E.giganteum, E.myriochaetum, E.ramosissimum, E.laevigatum, E.hyemale, E.variegatum and E.scirpoides. All of the species in this subgenus have evergreen stems. It is Perennial evergreen herb up to 3 m high, with creeping rhizome and a tall, stout. rush like, hollow and jointed stem having well defined nodes and longitudinally ribbed internodes; leave very small simple, scale like, arranged in whorl at the nodes; cone – like strobili at tips of aerial shoots.
