It’s common to start a new year off with the best of intentions only to see them fizzle out after a month or two. We tell ourselves that this is the year we prioritise ourselves, this is the year we will give up over-doing the coffee, alcohol, sugar, stress, going to bed late, our social media or online shopping addiction, our negative self-talk — all of the things we know don’t serve our health. Yet somehow, we find ourselves right back where we started after a brief burst of motivation. Why is this?

Sometimes it's because we are overly ambitious and try to make too many changes all at once. Other times it’s because what we have set out to do is not in alignment with our values or identity.

And humans will do virtually anything to stay true to their perceived identity. So how can you support yourself to set up and maintain the things that will prioritise your wellness for 2019? Take it slow! And be realistic about what’s achievable for you and your life. If you do a complete overhaul or get too restrictive, it might begin to feel impossible pretty quickly.

Let’s take a look at how you could spend the next 12 months slowly improving your health. Remember that ‘motivation’ can be like a sugar rush – temporary and leaving you yearning for more – whereas sustained, long-term change comes from understanding what we believe about ourselves and the level of care we feel we are worthy of.
