DIABETES IS ONE of the nation’s growing public health crises. Diabetes is the seventh-leading cause of death and is responsible for more deaths than AIDS and breast cancer combined. More than 34 million people in the United States have diabetes and one out of five don’t even know they have it. Florida CHARTS most recent data for Polk County shows that 14.7% of adults have been diagnosed with diabetes, overall. This is higher than the state’s overall percentage of 11.8%.
With numbers like this, it is important for people to learn more about their personal risk for diabetes and take action. November is American Diabetes Month, a time to bring awareness to the risks, prevention, and management of diabetes.
