IT’S THE GIVING time of year! However, some of you overdo it and become so exhausted you might secretly wish the holidays were over. If this is true for you, you’re not a Scrooge, you might be codependent. Codependency, in a brief definition, is losing yourself when caring for others.
In my DailyOM.com course “From Codependent to Independent,” I cover this insidious identity stealer. The holidays can exacerbate them. Some codependency “symptoms” are:
Over-giving and over-doing
Perfectionism to exhaustion
Caring for others more than you do yourself
Fear of losing relationships of any kind even if they are unhealthy
Need to be needed
Many people think codependency only applies to someone who lives with or loves a chemically dependent alcoholic, addict or abuser. It is much more.
