Nestled in the quaint location of Kampung Kampus in Yishun, BEE AMAZED GARDEN is an apiary with a young history of slightly over two years now. Despite its age, it has gotten a reputation as one of Singapore’s notable apiaries due to its peculiar mission statement. Founder John Chong coins BEE AMAZED GARDEN a “unique visitors’ centre”, one that facilitates a variety of programmes ranging from family-friendly activities to beekeeping workshops.
A teacher by trade, Chong has always been passionate about using education as a way to improve the lives of people around him. He was eventually promoted to viceprincipal at Zhangde PrimarySchool, which only paved the way for more creative learning opportunities. The idea of beekeeping as a way to engage and educate came to him during a field trip to a Malaysian stingless bee apiary with his students. Once he got past his initially fear of bees, he could envision an apiary providing learning lessons of life skills and leadership that transcended the confines of the classroom.
