It might be held in Louisville, but eager merrymakers all across the country don their best to devour delicious food and the thrilling spectacle with abandon for one glorious spring afternoon.

BACKGROUND: The first Kentucky Derby took place in 1875, making it the longest-running sports event in the United States. Held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, the 1.25-mile race of 20 thoroughbred horses now draws an estimated 150,000 spectators annually. The winning jockey and horse are adorned in roses, which is how the race earned its other moniker: Run for the Roses.
