Hasegawa’s 1/48 Shoki as a 47th Sentai Gunned Escort Fighter
Mike Williams

This grim aspect of Japan’s air war is graphically conveyed in Osprey Publishing’s B-29 Hunters of the JAAF, and Ki-44 Tojo Aces of World War 2. Noted in some depth are details of the many ramming attacks executed, and their results in forensic detail, along with specific Imperial Japanese Army Air Force (IJAAF) aircraft types deemed suitable to carry out such high-altitude interceptions, and here lay the inspiration for my modelling project, the desire to build an aircraft of the 47th Sentai.

The crucial aspect of the unit’s activities that I wished to replicate was a 40mm gunned escort fighter, to capture this truly desperate aspect of the late Pacific War in model form.

IPMS Column

Coronavirus has had many impacts on our lives over the past eleven months, many of them difficult, some of them tragic and most of them generally frustrating. To be faced suddenly with a situation where our lives are not our own to control, where we are unable to pursue the joys and pleasures we take for granted, and instead find ourselves all too often restricted to our own four walls is not something that is comfortable.

Apple Watch Series 6: The Best Smartwatch You Can Buy

The Apple Watch has been our longstanding Editors’ Choice for its excellent performance, unparalleled app selection, and ample health- and fitness-tracking features. With the Series 6, Apple builds upon its flagship smartwatch with the addition of a blood oxygen saturation sensor that calculates your SpO2 level on demand and captures periodic background measurements when you’re sleeping and inactive. Putting this technology in a consumer wearable has never been more important given the global COVID-19 pandemic, as it indicates how well your circulatory and respiratory systems are delivering oxygenated blood to your body and can help you gauge whether a hospital visit is necessary.
