The Cessna Grand Caravan 208 is a legend in aviation circles. A single engine utility aircraft that punches up with capabilities that rival many twin engine aircraft in its class. Its seemingly simple configuration belies its near extreme utility.

It's a plane almost never modeled, but now Seagull Models brings us a large scale version for 35cc gas engines (or equivalent size electric) with some surprising features. It's an impressive, 85-inch-span model that features lights, cockpit details, and a multitude of working doors. The ARF kit is available in military camouflage and colorful “sporty” motifs. Both versions include the optional but distinctive underside cargo module.

UNIQUE FEATURES

The all wood kit features a three piece wing where the outer panels are easily removable with screws on each side. That feature cleverly leaves the wing struts attached to the fuselage while also making the model breakdown easier for transportation. The wings also feature large, key together flaps with offset hinges on both the inner and outer wing panels.

A nice feature is the included navigation and landing lights in the wings. These bright LED modules attach to the wing tips (red and green) and two are embedded in the wing's leading edge (white). A controller module allows for several choices in strobe patterns and some form of remote control of the lights.

There are several hinged doors making getting into the fuselage a piece of cake. The fuselage features not only functional doors for both pilot and copilot, but also working rear cargo doors. All the doors make access to the inner workings of the model quite practical. Especially with the mostly permanently mounted center wing section. But wait, there's more. The cockpit includes two pilot figures, their accompanying seats, and even control yokes.

It's nice to also have cockpit details included.

To make maintenance easier, the pilots and seats are attached with hook and loop fastener, and the windshield is affied with screws instead of being glued on as per the manual. A nice bonus of the flight crew is that they add some weight to the nose which helps balance.

Various other scale details are included such as antennas, pitot tubes, and radar pod on the starboard wing really give the model some character. One surprise is that there is an optional servo controlled tow line release mechanism in the kit. This can be mounted in the top rear of the fuselage along with the actuating servo. Like the full scale, this model was designed for utility!

PRODUCT REVIEW: RC PLANE STANDS BENCHTOP MODEL

I’m a sucker for shop stuff. I buy tools I will probably never use just because they are cool, or I might need to use them someday. When Glen from RC Plane Stands reached out about a review, however, I knew as soon as I browsed their website that I would be receiving something I would use a lot, maybe even daily.
