Unique Coin Rewrites the History of London
Treasure Hunting magazine|June 2020
A silver penny of Ludica, a virtually unknown Saxon king of Mercia, has been discovered by Andy Hall while detecting in Wiltshire.
Unique Coin Rewrites the History of London

The coin was sold by Dix Noonan Webb in their coin sale on 10 March 2020. It had been estimated to fetch £10,000-£15,000 but finally sold for an impressive £32,000.

The coin has on the obverse a diademed bust of Ludica facing right with the legend LUDICA REX MER, while the reverse features the inscription LUN/DONIA/CIVIT in three lines. Ludica reigned for just over a year in AD 826-7.

Real or Fake?

The coin was found on a stubble field at Coombe Bissett in Wiltshire with an XP Deus in January 2016 during a one-off organised visit on farmland. It was found at approximately 3-4 inches deep and was contained within a small ball of densely textured soil.

Lost and Found?

There have been several instances over my long detecting career where, not only has it has been a delight to be able to help people who have lost things, but also a great thrill when such losses are returned to their owners. I have several memories of such occurrences.
