Ideal lowland heather bogs on the banks of the Shannon and good numbers of snipe provided the perfect setting for an international field
THE first European Championship for Irish Setters on snipe took place on 7 and 8 November on the bogs surrounding Athlone town on the banks of the River Shannon in the centre of Ireland. These lowland heather bogs are home to a good number of wintering snipe in Ireland. The location was selected because the large expanses of raised bog provide ideal conditions for testing dogs, as similar conditions and opportunities can be given to all those competing. Members of the Drum/Clonown Gun Club gave generously of their time and energy by both supporting and stewarding the event.
