<div style="page-break-before: always; page-break-after: always;">LAURA BINKS When I first met Laura she was hiding behind her mum&rsquo;s legs. We were three years old and have been best friends ever since. We&rsquo;ve shared primary school, most of high school and even our first share house. Laura wears many hats. She&rsquo;s an amazing writer, drawer, environmentalist and maker of things. She&rsquo;s a builder by trade but she&rsquo;s currently the mayor of Strathbogie Shire, Victoria. Navigating being in the public eye is something Laura and I talk about a lot, especially navigating everyone&rsquo;s opinions of you. Over the years our relationship has changed and is continually reinventing itself, but the thing that keeps us coming back &ndash; even if we&rsquo;ve been apart &ndash; is love. We have a sisterly love. We fight and we clash and sometimes we have pretty different opinions about things but there&rsquo;s always a real support there. We share the same core values and we both love the bush. I&rsquo;ve always admired how in tune Laura is with her emotions. Growing up in the public eye, I&rsquo;m sometimes not as quick to share what I&rsquo;m really thinking because I&rsquo;m a bit of a people pleaser. Laura is quite brave in that she&rsquo;s not a people pleaser but she loves people.<div style="page-break-before: always; page-break-after: always;">HELEN KEIGHERY I lost my mum a year ago. We were incredibly close and I feel very lucky to get the mum I did. Growing up, she was hilarious. She was a drama teacher, so there were lots of costumes and props in our house. We would turn ourselves into fairies or witches and do street parades. Mum was the kind of parent and community member who anyone could go to. Everybody she ever worked with had a connection with her. For me, being with her 24/7 was a privilege because something fun and crazy was always going on. I guess I&rsquo;ve been shaped by that. Mum&rsquo;s advice to me wasn&rsquo;t so much in words. I was always encouraged and supported to do anything I wanted. Mum wasn&rsquo;t a show parent; she would have been happy if I had wanted to be a butcher or a bookbinder or whatever. It just so happened that I wanted to be an artist, and Mum was so excited and supportive of that. Starting my career at 13 weirdly felt normal because Mum had always said, &ldquo;You can do anything you want to do. Don&rsquo;t think that because you&rsquo;re from the country or because you&rsquo;re young or because you&rsquo;re self-taught you can&rsquo;t.&rdquo; One of my favourite quotes from Mum was &ldquo;Let your freak flag fly.&rdquo; And I did and it turned out really well for me.<div style="page-break-before: always; page-break-after: always;">VALI MYERS When I was a little girl, Mum took me to [artist] Vali Myers&rsquo; workshop at the Nicholas Building in Melbourne. We bought her book of prints and from that day she became one of my favourite artists. Over the years I&rsquo;ve watched every documentary and read all of the books on her. Her life was probably one of her best artworks. There&rsquo;s a phrase that pops into my head, which is that &ldquo;she lived like she&rsquo;d already died.&rdquo; Vali really lived like there was nothing to fear. She was Australian-born but lived most of her life in Positano, Italy, with 40 animals and two lovers in this completely bohemian, free lifestyle. They called her &ldquo;the witch of Positano&rdquo;. Vali is a touchstone for me. I&rsquo;m nowhere near as wild or bohemian but something about her and her energy resonated with me. Her etchings and her paintings are just incredible. They&rsquo;re really detailed and transcendent and kind of spiritual and spooky. Her art often deals with things like sex and death and whatever&rsquo;s behind the veil. What I love about Vali is that she reminds me to be wild. If she were alive today and I could pick her brain, I&rsquo;d probably ask her about stages of life as an artist. I find it interesting that someone could live so offthe grid &ndash; out of this shack in this valley, just creating artworks by candlelight &ndash; and then be able to come back into society. In my house today, I still have the postcard Vali wrote on for me when I was little.
