SYLVIA HELLMANN Everyone loved my mother, Sylvia. She was energetic, always positive and very down-to-earth. I grew up in South Africa, and my mother was a marvellous cook; she would make sugar biscuits, apricot chicken and asparagus pies. When my dad was in a car accident – a head-on collision that broke every bone in his body – my mum started selling cakes to pay the bills. She would bake 250 cakes a week, with two Mixmasters and one big oven. Our house forever smelt like vanilla essence. What is amazing is that I never remember seeing my mother in despair or suffering during that difficult time after my father’s accident. I only remember her warmth, her smile, her beautiful energy and her unshakeable will, as she ran back and forth to the hospital, nurturing my dad, her business and three daughters.
