When Kathrine Switzer ran in the 1967 Boston Marathon, women were not allowed to register as they were deemed “too fragile”. When an official cottoned on, he tried to force her off the course – but Switzer kept running. It was another five years until women were allowed to enter the marathon. This year, on the 50th anniversary of the race, Switzer competed again as a 70-year-old.
