Deep in lockdown, a picture from my pre-pandemic life would creep into my mind: first to mourn lost luxuries and then as a teaser for freedoms to come. Everybody has one. Mine (and the Beach Boys’) is a tiny sliver of paradise called Kokomo, a private island resort 45 minutes by seaplane from Fiji’s mainland. It was my last getaway before 2020’s first shutdown – forcing us to shelve this story until borders reopened – but thankfully my memory of it is perfectly intact. Turquoise water bathed in golden sunlight, oversized coconut trees, swaying hammocks and service that seems to preempt my every need, Kokomo is where extravagance meets nature to imbue a heightened state of bliss.
