Thomas Mann once wrote, “Venice is both a fairy tale and a tourist trap,” and at its heart is the Bauer Palazzo, a hotel more than a century old. The Byzantine facade construction stands proudly amidst the clichés of the city and dominates the Grand Canal like a heritage. It was in one of its suites, that Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie embarked on one of the most controversial love scenes in cinema in the 70s. It was only here that Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Marilyn Monroe used to come to hang out on the velvet sofas after dinner. Not only that, its terrace is the place where Lady Gaga had appeared in the iconic pose, tilted head and ecstatic smile, for the last Venice Film Festival, overlooking the Grand Canal.

History and heritage

It all began when Julius Grünwald, a young Austrian real estate fanatic visited the romantic fronts of Venice and fell in love with the daughter of Mr Bauer, Director of the Hôtel de la Ville. The deep bond of love and marriage between the couple gave birth to a business partnership— the opening of the prestigious BauerGrunwald Hotel. Later, the property was purchased by Mr Bennati, a successful Ligurian shipbuilder. His keen interest in real estate and restoration breathed a new life into the property.
