A stunning exhibition celebrates the legacy of Christian Dior and the six designers who succeeded him throughout the 70 years of the House of Dior. Feast your eyes on some of the most exquisite couture pieces from fashion history, in this exclusive fashion spread shot in the grand halls of Musée des Arts Décoratifs.
On a February morning 70 years ago, one man took the fashion world by storm when he launched the New Look in 1947 – a style that in a time of darkness sparked hope and made fashion, women and France look and feel new again.
During the dire years of war and occupation in France, fabric was rationed, reducing women’s clothing to simpler cuts and shorter hemlines. But things took a turn when 42-year-old Christian Dior presented his first revolutionary collection in the austere aftermath of World War II. Banishing the boxy, masculine straight silhouettes of wartime to the past, the designer’s extravagant New Look introduced long, flowing dresses and great, luxurious swaths of fabric. Its opulence rejected all restrictions and redefined the women’s silhouette to become one of ultra-femininity.
