Vintage and preloved luxury fashion has been experiencing a renaissance lately, thanks to resale platforms like Vestiaire Collective. As fashion becomes circular, Vestiaire Collective’s President and Co-Founder, Fanny Moizant, keeps us in the loop.
Why do you think there has been a rise in vintage and preloved fashion recently?
The younger generation has been voicing out a lot about sustainability and ethical issues. More consumers are actively shopping with resale in mind, making fashion investments with their purchases. Fashion seasons have also been increasingly blurred thanks to streetwear, allowing social media to dictate fashion trends. Many fashion bloggers and influencers are encouraging the return of vintage pieces as today’s “It” items.
How sustainable is shopping vintage or preloved fashion?
Extending the life cycle of a garment by just nine months through reselling can reduce waste, water and carbon footprints by up to 30 per cent, while cutting resource costs by 20 per cent. Many Singaporeans consider sustainability in fashion important, but only 28 per cent of them have heard of the term “circular fashion”. Vestiaire Collective offers an easily accessible platform for them to practice circular fashion. We also launched a Circular Fashion e-Guide to educate and empower consumers with ways to shop sustainably.
