SMELLS RIGHT

Olfactory representations of strict gender roles are taking a back seat as scents beyond the binary shake up the perfume industry
SANJANA SALUNKHE
SMELLS RIGHT

I have always loved using my husband’s fragrances. My skin loves to cuddle in strong, leathery, and woody notes. There have also been instances when people have come up to me and asked me about my perfume but the conversation has usually ended with an uncomfortable grin as I start cueing men’s cologne brands. Why so? Because the idea of a woman (who should be into flowery, fruity, and sweet scents) wearing a masculine scent isn’t what our olfactory history has taught us. Do I find it sexist? Yes. Is it stereotyping? Yes. Does it take away my freedom to enjoy a passionate potion of vetiver and musk? No.

This is not limited to user experience, but also extends to the overall brand ethos. We're using our years of expertise and understanding of the industry to curate the coolest young brands that resonate with today's conscious consumers.
