Alarming Stats: How To Ensure Safety Of Indian Women
Glittering India|March 2018

Let us come straight down to certain brass-tacks. The crime rate against women has risen from 41.7 percent to 53.9 percent in India within the years 2011 to 2015.

Rinky Marwaha

A total of about 3,27,394 cases were reported in the country. This figure includes 34,651 cases of rape, 4,437 cases of attempted rape, 59,277 events of kidnappings etc., 7,634 cases of dowry deaths, and a total of about 1,13,403 cases of domestic cruelty et al. The statistics, no doubt, are a real cause for worry. After all, we keep speaking of women empowerment and basic freedom of rights given to women – and now, we have such alarming facts and figures knocking right at our doorsteps.

Also, the number of rape cases went up from the above-given 34,651 in 2015 to 38,947 in 2016. Also, the overall number of crimes against women increased from 3,29,243 in 2015 to 3,38,954 in 2016. A break-up of figures of states reveals that West Bengal registered 19,302 cases, Rajasthan logged 13,811, and Uttar Pradesh was with 11,156 cases of cruelty by husband. Madhya Pradesh ranked first in the sordid list of the number of rapes with 4,882 cases registered, Uttar Pradesh came a close second with 4,816 and Maharashtra with 4,189 cases. The national capital, New Delhi, has a crime rate of 160.4 (in comparison with an average of a much lesser figure of 55.2 for the entire country).

The stats are rather dismal………

With such dismal facts and figures right before our very eyes, we come to a rather sad state of affairs. In fact, it is evident is that India as a country is really in dire straits when it comes to women safety. Here, women are not safe when they step out of the frontiers of their homes and offices. And rather abysmally speaking, nor are they safe when they are within the four walls of the interiors of their homes and hearths. The average adult Indian woman should be guarded when she steps out to go to any place. In these times, the issues of women safety are taking on really king-size proportions. With rising numbers of cases of misdeeds against women going up, our eyes and ears are really opening up to certain horrific crimes which are taking place. Some say that actually these rising figures are because more and more women are opening up to the idea of reporting the wrong-doings which happen to them. They are going public with all this information and know-how. Actually, the crime rate may not really be rising. In fact, it could be going down by a small margin. This surely is music to anyone’s ears.
