A new wave of feminism has hit India. Women are now openly speaking against the culture of sexual violence which has been rampant in India for long. They are openly naming and shaming their sexual predators. The time to make the much-required change is now or never.
India is witnessing winds of change. Women are no longer ready to be served on the plates for sexual predators roaming every nook and corner of the country to take a dig from. Neither are they now shy or afraid of any social taboos and are discussing the sexual abuses faced by them in their home and office spaces in open details. Big names from film, television, politics, advertising, business, literary and art circles have been accused of sexually abusing and harassing women for long by displaying their power in fetching them meatier roles and plump work assignments in return for sexual favours. Sadly, the sexist form of abuses which are hurled at women both at their workplace and homes does not even amount to any kind of crime. The solution herein lies in tackling the situation by uprooting the deeply rooted misogyny and sexism prevalent in the social fabric of our country.
After earlier campaigns like The Black Noise Project against eve teasing in 2003, the Pink Chaddi movement against moral policing in 2009, the Slut Walk protest against victim-blaming, the Why Loiter project on women’s right to public spaces in 2011, the Pinjra Tod (break the cage) movement against sexist curfew rules in student halls and the Bekhauf Azadi (freedom without fear) March in 2017, set the tone for this much larger movement which is bringing about the much needed justice and change for women of this country. The #MeToo movement in India has some ugly truths and grave realities tumbling out of closets now. Women from all walks of life not just showbiz are openly talking about the sexual assaults, abuses and harassments face by them for long in return for work provided to them by their assaulters. There are many forms of sexual abuses-physical, verbal, non-verbal, via chat, text and in many other ways.
