There are people who have made so many trips from Punjab to Delhi as they have to be back home as it is the wheat harvesting season. Whether it is a deadly disease like Covid, they will not move till their desires are fulfilled.
Mandeep Singh, 65, adjusts his blue turban in his tractor’s side mirror as he prepares to join the daily sit-in protests. He drove the same tractor miles from his village in India’s Punjab state. Singh joined the protests at Singhu border that has turned into the Indian farmers’ hub following their call for indefinite protests. Many protesters arrived carrying food and other daily commodities, preparing to stay for months.
Farmers do not fear Covid but they do fear the agenda. While speaking to Gurpreet Singh, 45, he said, “We are not scared of the virus. We have been sitting here through all the weather conditions and will continue to sit here whether there is Covid or the sweltering heat. We are strong so Covid doesn’t affect us”.
Don’t people die of cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses? There’s just this corona-corona hype,” Chanpreet Singh, 32, continued and said that I would prefer sitting here than taking a step back, we are not doing this for leisure or to disturb our people but the pain we go through is much more than anything”, he concluded.
