If somebody puts you down or criticizes you, just keep on believing in yourself and turn it into something positive”, this quote by Leah Labelle sets an exemplary for the pioneering young hotelier Keshav Lalit Suri , who was one of the strugglers in the battle against Supreme court on the section 377.
Keshav has been an active campaigner for gay rights in India and he is also running gay-friendly nightclubs within ‘the Lalit Group of hotels’, 12 hotels runs across India and one in London. He has also brought in drag shows from around the world. He broke all the stereotypes of the society and married his long-time partner Cyril Feuillebois in France.
In an interview with Glimpse Magazine, Suri shares his childhood struggles and the way forward for the community. Excerpts:
How was your childhood? Were you ever bullied?
I am the youngest of four siblings in the family. We all were loved, pampered and taught to be respectful. My parents were busy building this empire and I was raised by my aunt. However, it was a great childhood at home. I went to an all-boys school and faced a lot of bullying and discrimination. I was called all the nasty names in the book.
Did your family accept your sexual orientation at once? Or it took time for them to understand and accept?
