A constant source of knowledge, support, influence, power, and inspiration combine to make a woman of substance. It is not just a name tag, it is something through which a woman inspires who so ever comes in contact with her. She makes people believe that life is for a purpose and you have only one life to conquer what you want. A woman of substance is a woman of power, a woman of positive influence and a woman of deep meaning. We at Glimpse get talking to such women who are an inspiration for all of us.
STYLE REVOLUTIONARIES PROF. JAPPY & DR. MINTY
For Professor Jappy and Dr. Minty their couture brand in Amritsar ‘Simple Sassy by Jappy Minty’ is like a union of two of the greatest passions in life— creativity and women empowerment.
These lovely ladies are breaking the stereotypes, rather than indulging in the tight fits they prefer to lose fitted clothes as they believe that confidence can be boosted up when you are comfortable in your own skin. Also, they are much into pastels than the shiny brights, pastels are regal. These self-taught designers kept us hooked with their strong personality, creative mindset and sharp sense of humor.
Was having your own label always a dream?
Being siblings we’ve always been close and so we knew we wanted to build something together. Fashion has always been a huge passion for us, but as we grew older… well, let’s just say we realised that perhaps with talent, we needed to study as well. Jappy did her higher studies in computers and is a professor by profession. Whereas I am a Dentist by profession, I did my bachelors in dentistry from Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Dental Sciences & Research, Dental College, Amritsar. I guess things started to fall into place once were settled and that’s when we knew that we’d start our own brand.
What is it like to work on a brand together?
SISTERS: It’s always helpful to have two pairs of hands instead of one, but as you may have guessed we’re not always on the same wavelength! This actually helps us think outside the box and expand beyond our comfort zone.
What is your creative process like together and when do you get your best ideas?
We both have a fascination for embroideries and a lot more such things but at the same time we love to play with hues from pastels to bright. We customise every sort of couture, so once we pick on something we start brainstorming. This is where it gets fun; we explore the traditional souks (markets) for different pieces that inspire us. We share our inputs and work on until we are both satisfied.
Have Punjab’s traditions and textiles influenced your designs?
SISTERS: Punjab is filled with a rich culture and traditions. We are influenced by everything we see; the fabrics, embroidery, jewellery, and natural beauty. Through our collection we are trying to subtly bring out these beautiful treasures that our country holds.
Shhh! Tell me a secret about yourselves!
SISTERS: We’re just typical Amritsari girls, who loves fashion and have big dreams. We are on the way to making those dreams become a reality and hope to inspire others in believing in their visions and following through.
Can you share a few trousseau tips every bride should swear by?
SISTERS: For the brides, we would like to say don't stick to heavy outfits, keep minimal embroideries on different styles fortrousseau. Indo westerns are also a good choice and make sure to have a mix of both pastels and bright hues for a unique and amazing look.
