Punjab has more than 20 percent of private arms license holders in the whole of India, and when you top it with a bloated sense of male chauvinism prevalent amongst the Punjabi puttars and alcoholism, the combination becomes deadly for one and all. Let’s not forget the sexual crimes against women which are also triggered when the above factors merge. The recent cases of people losing their life after having being shot at accidently or arbitrarily, force us to demand action against this long-standing feudalistic gun culture of Punjab which has destroyed many a lives and broken many happy families.
How can we forget the fate of dancer Kulwinder Kaur who was shot dead while she was dancing on the stage at a wedding in Bathinda’s Maur Mandi? The young dancer was newly married and was looking forward to a blissful life with her husband when her life was snubbed out by a drunken man who shot her at point blank range.
Recently after a jam-packed performance of a popular Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala, one fire shot in an after performance party, snubbed out the life of another young man in Mohali. Earlier in 2018 singer Parmish Verma and his friend Kulwant Singh Chahal was shot at in Mohali. Not long back a 22-year-old student was killed in a celebratory fire in Hoshiarpur. In another case a clash between two rival groups of boys during a fashion show in Panjab University had landed two students in the hospital.
In yet another case, Parbhjit Singh who was 30 years of age was killed while he was dancing at a wedding, because of a celebratory fire, which is a trend in the hi profile weddings of Punjab. Today his widow and his two daughters are living in dire poverty. Who is accountable for Prabhjits death and who is responsible for the plight of his widow and family? If these cases don’t shake you up, there are still many ready to tumble out as we open discussion on the thriving gun culture of Punjab.
