1 A UNIVERSAL CAUSE

In 2016, Emma Watson made headlines with her Met Gala gown woven from yarn composed of recycled plastic bottles. Calvin Klein designed the monochrome ensemble in collaboration with the Green Carpet Challenge, a platform created by sustainable consultancy company Eco-Age that combines high-profile designers with a sustainability initiative. While the outfit made a style statement, it made an even bigger sustainability one. This was but one of many instances where sustainability in the apparel industry was highlighted.

Locally, at the 2018 AFI Cape Town Fashion Week, South African designers banded together for a cause with a group fashion show to support the Fashion Revolution movement, promoting the rise of sustainable fashion in the country with their collections of environmentally and ethically produced clothing and accessories.
