Bold And Beautiful
Fashion Zone|September 2016

At a time when the fairness obsession in the country is questioned at length, there is a star in the fashion industry who has muted her critics with her sparkling brown skin and truckloads of confidence. this is ishit yamini, who with her Miss Bihar 2013, Miss Maxim 2015 and much more glittery feathers in her crown, has taken on the fashion industry by its sparkling tail. here she talks to Fashion Zone about growing up in patna, her ride up the fashion trail and everything else that makes her a shining star!

Aswani Dravid

A Patna girl at heart, being born and brought up in the city, I did my schooling from D.A.V School. Being the youngest at home, I was always the pampered one. I loved being outdoors playing in the sun and mud, and my favourite toy was my bicycle. But my parents were a tad strict regarding play hours and study hours. As a kid, I was so much into sports and participated in most of the extra-curricular activities at school. As most children at a young age, I loved reading everything apart from the course books.

Fashion-Filled Campus Life

I did my graduation from BIT, Noida. During that time I had a huge inclination towards the glamour industry and did many fashion shows in Delhi. I won some regional beauty pageants in Bihar, and it boosted my confidence. It encouraged me to try for national level pageants like Femina Miss India and Miss Maxim India.I was a campus princess finalist for Femina Miss India in 2014 and then I won Miss Maxim India title in 2015.

I loved participating in beauty pageants and the way experts train you is a once in a lifetime experience that helped me groom myself into what I am today. What attracted me the most was the fact that it was a real test for a girl from every aspect; there was no standing there and looking pretty! One needed to be more than a doll. It was about beauty with a purpose, a girl who oozes confidence and positivity, while being proactive about giving her life a purpose in both her own career and the lives of others. My biggest encouragement in all this was my parents, who staunchly supported my endeavours. I grew up in a family who motivated me to do things that I enjoy and who always taught me that beauty isn’t superficial.

Home and Memories

My parents live in Patna, and I was born and brought up in the capital city. My mom is a former lecturer and now a homemaker, while my dad is a retired government official as well as a writer and a poet. I have one elder sister who is an active blogger and is currently pursuing a career as a digital content manager. I reside in Mumbai with my sister, and we have family get-togethers whenever my parents hop down to visit us. Since my childhood days, my parents have always been my rock, and even now I love to share most of my queries with them. My mom has always been the closest to me and knows me inside out. There isn’t a single bit of me that she doesn’t know about, and that includes the number of guys I have dated! Suffice it to say, she is more like a best friend to me than just a parent.

The Indian Fairness Obsession

From the day I was born, my mom took it on herself to try and lighten my skin tone with different oils and lotions. Everyone told her that it would be quite a task to find a groom for me as I was very dark. My elder sister is fair and pretty, and I remember how often I was compared with her by the neighbours, being valued against my own sibling in terms of skin tone. I have had people tell me that though I have good features, I would have looked more beautiful if I was fair. Thankfully, I never experienced this kind of discrimination at home. My parents never discriminated between me and my sister.

I am not ruffled by such allegations now. Even if I get a chance to change any physical attribute of mine, including my skin tone, I wouldn’t change a thing. I am very well satisfied with the way I look. I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty.

Chasing Dreams

I have always loved movies and want to act in good movies and make a mark for myself. The southern industry is huge and churns out good films, of which I have seen a few. I would love to be a part of it all one day.I hope people in the south are as keen to accept me as I am to work with them. I have done shoots and modelling for the renowned designer Hari Anand. His garments are gorgeous, and I had so much fun shooting with the team. I have never felt so pretty before. Life, for Me is…

I see myself chilling and working at the same time. It’s rightly said that once you enjoy your work it won’t be any different from a vacation. So follow your dreams, your passion and nothing will look like a burden.
