A self-proclaimed redneck from Portland, Oregon, Harding became a preeminent figure skater in the late&nbsp;1980s&nbsp;and won the U.S. championship in 1991, becoming the first American woman to execute the gravity-defying&nbsp;triple-axel&nbsp;jump in her routine. But after that, Harding&rsquo;s stars began to cross as she ran up against slicker competition, most specifically Nancy Kerrigan, a Bostonian&nbsp;rival&nbsp;from&nbsp;the other end of the country&mdash;and the other side of the tracks. This cultural and class collision culminated disastrously in the run-up to the 1994 Olympics, when Kerrigan was attacked out of the blue by someone hell-bent on breaking her leg with a baton. The bizarre assault triggered a 24/7 media frenzy&mdash;pre-OJ, pre&ndash;reality TV&mdash;after which Harding was cleared of prior knowledge but implicated for not fessing up to everything she knew about &ldquo;the incident,&rdquo; as it&rsquo;s termed in the movie, which involved her ex-husband, Jeff&nbsp;Gillooly, and a cabal of goofballs portrayed here as more inept than the baddies in Home Alone.I, Tonya surfs along on fictional reenactments of interviews with all the characters involved in Harding&rsquo;s rise and fall. Outdoing their previous work by a good measure, director Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl) and writer Steven Rogers (Hope Floats, Kate &amp; Leopold, and, oy, P.S. I Love You) infuse the film with a narrative drive and funky energy that pull us ever closer to this&nbsp;one-of&nbsp;a-kind&nbsp;champion, who tells us ruefully that &ldquo;I thought being famous was going to be fun,&rdquo; and later&mdash;in a matter-of-fact moment of truth&mdash;&ldquo;You&rsquo;re all my attackers, too.&rdquo;Through it all, Robbie&rsquo;s innately glamorous looks are persuasively dialed down behind a strip-mall makeup job and an elaborately permed she-mullet. At the same time, her portrayal vividly spans the vast, desperate chasm between Harding&rsquo;s life of chronic domestic violence and the sheer joy and&nbsp;&eacute;lan&nbsp;of her on-ice performances&mdash;a magic that is&nbsp;spell&nbsp;bindingly&nbsp;underlined during the film&rsquo;s closing credits, when we see clips of Harding&rsquo;s actual historic triumphs.
