When Georges Vuitton (son of Louis) first introduced the house&rsquo;s now-iconic Monogram canvas in 1896, he couldn&rsquo;t have predicted that what was originally a fanciful rendering of its founder&rsquo;s initials would become a covetable blank slate for some of the art world&rsquo;s most renowned names. Over the years, Vuitton has enlisted Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince, and, most recently, JeffKoons (who emblazoned bags with an image of the Mona Lisa and other treasures of the Louvre) to transform the brand&rsquo;s already desirable carryalls into bona fide collector&rsquo;s items. Now, timed to the Louis Vuitton X exhibition in Los Angeles (June 28&ndash;September 15), dedicated to celebrating the house&rsquo;s 160 years of collaboration, the brand presents its ArtyCapucines project. Vuitton asked six artists to transform the tasteful top-handle, including L.A.&rsquo;s own Alex Israel. &ldquo;When Louis Vuitton approached me about the collaboration, I was working on my Wave paintings,&rdquo; says Israel of his surfer-chic design. &ldquo;It was a completely natural transference of motif&mdash;from the walls of my studio right onto the bag.&rdquo; His materials of choice? Neon and plexiglass, aka the stuff West Coast summers are made of. &ldquo;I wanted the bag to embody a certain spirit: a kind of happy, fun, California vibe,&rdquo; says Israel, who added two surfboard fins as a finishing touch (they double as a mirror and a comb).Despite this being Israel&rsquo;s first fashion collaboration with the brand, his work is in the permanent collection of the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris as well as the personal collection of the Arnault family, owners of Vuitton&rsquo;s parent company. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve always been aware of and impressed by the brand&rsquo;s commitment to contemporary art,&rdquo; the artist says.
