“Coming into the music industry as a young girl, I was definitely malleable to ‘standards’ because I didn’t know what my own boundaries or groundings were. I did feel like I had to squeeze myself into this cookie-cutter shape of what a young female performer should be: wear a short skirt with heels, while carrying a giant bass guitar bag. Smile often, don’t say the ‘wrong’ thing in interviews. Be easy, be palatable. I think a lot of these ended up creating the dissonance between who I was, and who people thought I was, that eventually ended up in me actually dissociating. It happened each time I had to be ‘Narelle Kheng’ and that’s when I lost a lot of my memories.
