It goes without saying that beauty is nothing without science, whether it’s a great skincare formulation that actually gives results, or an innovative mechanism that keeps active ingredients fresh. And when it comes to science and innovation in the vast realm of skincare, there are some names you just know you can trust — and Japanese label Clé de Peau Beauté is one of them.
Founded in 1982, the brand’s entire ethos is based on a scientific discovery that the skin is, well, alive and discerning. It can “think” on its own, can differentiate between positive and negative stimuli, and can react independently to maintain its optimal condition — this insight was called Skin Intelligence. So the brand created formulas based on this core understanding of skin smarts, to achieve results that go beyond skin-deep.
A visit to Shiseido’s Global Innovation Centre makes it clear that the label takes their science seriously. Through a microscope, we saw what renewed skin cells looked like, and how they reacted when the different types of stimuli were introduced. When the negative ones were activated, the cells went into an uncontrollable frenzy, while the positive ones brought about a gentle state of movement that looked almost like the cells were humming.
