The idea of a wellness retreat is simple: Take a few days off from your bustling city girl life and spend long languid days by the beach or at the spa to unwind. You might even opt for a more extreme version, with daily yoga, meditation, and clean food to detox the body, before going back to your regular life. In theory, a little break now and then sounds great, but more often than not, once you check out of that retreat, reality hits, and all the benefits that little break gave you will vanish in an instant, like smoke.
So how do you overcome the short-lived effects of such a retreat? Inspired by the world's interest in health and wellness following the impact of the pandemic, the Wellbeing Sanctuary by Banyan Tree strives to offer a different experience by educating and guiding guests on their well-being journey, so that the effect lasts even after they check out. Intrigued? I was too and so I embarked on this journey to find out more. While this programme is available at various Banyan Trees around the world, I chose Banyan Tree Krabi because it is spanking new, having just opened in October 2020. Besides, Krabi is the perfect backdrop for such a retreat. The island is still largely untouched and much less commercialized compared to Phuket, and boasts a new international airport - a sign of its status as an up-and-coming holiday destination.
