Breaking Illusions With Nazha
ELLE Singapore|October 2021
When Nazha first took to the screens at the age of 20, her luminescent beauty and poised demeanour made it look like it was the natural place for her to be. She’s since proven to be more than a pretty face though, establishing herself as an actress, a model, and a dancer

Chinese actress Nazha’s ascent to stardom is something akin to a Cinderella story. Starting her career through a series of serendipitous events that begin with a “once upon a time” because of their fairytale-like quality, it is startling to realise that she has since racked up close to a decade of experience in show business.

Growing up, her parents worked in a gardening unit and an oil company. They always had high expectations of her. But while her mother wanted her to go the traditional route of studying at a well-known university and scoring a good job, her father suggested art school.

She actually started her performing career as a dancer — not surprising since she majored in dance while she was at Xinjiang Arts University. The appeal of this art form came from the learning process. “To me, learning to dance from a young age is like having to attend school for many children. It’s a natural thing. Learning to dance is actually very tough, as it demands one’s body to be flexible. When I was young, it felt really painful, but when I finished a dance routine, it brought me such a great sense of accomplishment that it made me fall in love with the dance more and more.” Nazha adds, “In my heart, I believe that ethnic dances are full of character. They carry on the traditional culture of China, and they are unique to the Chinese people.”

It was only when scouts on the street chanced upon her that she started her career as a model. And in a seemingly natural evolution from dancer to model to actress, she then decided to audition for the Beijing Film Academy. There, her picture was taken by the media as she was taking the exam, and immediately went viral as the internet crowned her “the most beautiful candidate”.
