It took a long time, but we are finally here. Our feeds have been inundated with photos of women (and men!) with poreless skin, perfect features, and flawless complexion for far too long. But these BeautyPlus-ed and Facetuned faces are on their way out, courtesy a set of brave, young influencers who are quietly leading the #FilterLess photo brigade.
If you don’t believe us, then just search for hashtags like #SkinPositivity, #FreeThePimple, or #AcnePositivity on Instagram, and you will be met with photos of thousands of people who are embracing the skin they are in. Wearing their conditions (like eczema, vitiligo, acne, and more) as badges of honour, this collective is working towards normalising something that many of us go through, but feel hesitant to share. And while you may choose to work on your skin or treat the condition (hey, you do you!), this movement is all about helping you feel confident and unjudged along the way.
“After trying several painful treatments, it hit me that I was going through mental and physical agony just to ‘fix’ my skin colour. The vitiligo, on the other hand, wasn’t hurting me! Experiences like these made me realise that it wasn’t worth it. I was tired of hiding my spots and dealing with people staring at me all the time. The moment I spoke up about my condition, I felt relieved. It felt as if the burden I had been carrying all my life had lifted. I felt happier and life became easier. It made me realise that when you start loving yourself, people around you start loving that about you, and they start seeing through your skin condition. It all starts with us. I still have some insecurities, though. You can’t make it all go away in a day...it is a process that involves consciously pushing yourself out of negative thoughts and feelings. We need to have a broader concept of beauty...a more inclusive one. That would prevent us from comparing ourselves with others, and appreciate what we have.” —MANISHA MALIK, DIGITAL CONTENT CREATOR
