The South African singer has just released her fifth studio album, Nqaba Yam, which invites listeners to join her for an intimate journey into her life. YOU caught up with the acclaimed singer.
What does Nqaba Yam mean?
Nqaba Yam means “my fortress”, which is God. To others, it might be something else that gives them strength and hope. From the first song to the last, it’s about that one thing that gives you strength. To me, it’s all about my endurance and everything I’ve gone through, and my happiness.
What are some of those things you’ve gone through?
I only came [ from Phumlani in the Eastern Cape] to Joburg to sing. It was a platform for me to sing and to inspire people with my story. Lately I’ve been in the news for all the wrong reasons. I want my story to be told as it is and directly from me.
