It was the cloud that hung over their golden wedding – the spectre of scandal that told the world the salient truth: all was not well in the family of the woman Harry had fallen hook, line, and sinker for.
The drama between Meghan Markle and her father, Thomas, had been ramping up for days. Far away in Mexico, Thomas claimed he’d been snubbed by Meghan and Harry and wasn’t welcome at their wedding.
In the months and years that followed, the spectacle refused to die down, with Thomas telling the media, seemingly at every opportunity, that Meghan had all but cut him out of her life – after everything he’d done for her, including putting her through private school and university.
He never got to see her marry, he’s never met Harry, he’s never clapped eyes on her son, Archie.
But fascinating new court documents have finally thrown some light on just what went down before Harry and Meghan wed in St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle on that sun-splashed day in May 2018.
THE COURT PAPERS
The documents include text messages Meghan and Harry sent Thomas in the turbulent days leading up to their nuptials that show the pair tried to reach out to Thomas and even protect him.
The texts form part of the evidence submitted by Meghan’s legal team in the court action she’s instigated against UK publisher Associated Newspapers.
At the time of going to press, a hearing was due in a few days.
Meghan’s lawyers claim the newspaper house didn’t accurately portray the situation, leading the duchess to believe she was being represented in a negative light.
