They’d wanted to marry before his birth but little Gordanlee had other plans
Colin Hendricks

WHEN she woke up on the morning of her wedding day, she felt more than just butterflies in her belly. But she tried to ignore the pain because in just a few hours’ time she’d be walking down the aisle and she didn’t want anything to spoil her big moment.

Jena Carolus’ baby wasn’t due for another week. Surely, she thought, the little one would hang in there for a bit longer.

But babies play by their own rules and this one had decided it was time to enter the big, wide world.

Still, Jena (31) went about her preparations without breathing a word to anyone. First she picked up her wedding gown, then went to have her hair done.

But an hour before the wedding ceremony was due to take place at a church in her hometown of Vredenburg in the Western Cape, the pain became unbearable.

Gender Pay Gap Resulting In Mental Disorders In Women

Women in the country have to deal with a plethora of complex issues that range from social stigmas related to their work to inhibited access to education. The societal norms often force women to take care of domestic needs, as a result of which they often need to stay at home and look after the family. Girl children belonging to the lower strata of the society often fail to get proper education and those who do make it to school are often pulled out owing to a financial crisis in the family. An Oxfam report published recently stated that over 23 million Indian girls drop out of school every year because of a shortage of menstrual hygiene management facilities and toilets in school.
