First space Olympics

THOUGHT Olympic Games take place only on Earth? Well, think again. While we were watching the thrills and spills of the 2020 Games in Tokyo, astronauts onboard the International Space Station (ISS) were having a tournament of their own.

Astronauts were split into two teams to compete in events mimicking Olympic sporting disciplines – but being weightless in space meant the events were adapted.

Team Crew Dragon went head-to-head with Team Soyuz, competing in special events like “no handball” – in which participants blow a small table tennis ball through a space guarded by a goalie – and “sharpshooting” with a rubber band.
