THE FINALE Taking the stage one last time in Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Chadwick Boseman plays Levee, an ambitious but troubled horn player.

Based on the 1982 play by August Wilson, the film focuses on a day in 1920s Chicago when blues singer Gertrude, stage name Ma Rainey (Viola Davis), and her band are preparing to rehearse and record their hits at a studio.

The oppression that his people face gets Levee thinking about what it means to be a black artist in “a white man’s world”. Then Levee shows up with new songs, new shoes and a new attitude, and arrogance and an announcement that he intends to bring a fresh and jazzy influence to their sound which infuriates Ma Rainy and his bandmates.
