An assassination attempt on the king, a fire at Nampara and an alarming new nemesis for Ross are all packed in during the first episode as the fifth and final series of Poldark begins.
It’s 1800 and the loss of Elizabeth Warleggan, who died during childbirth at the end of series four, still looms large over Cornwall. But Ross and Demelza barely have time to toast the new year when Ross is called to London on a mission to help free his old friend, Ned Despard, from prison.
