With great power, there must also come great humanity. Stan Lee, who has died aged 95, revolutionised comic-book history multiple times with – among other things – this understanding.
Empathy for the little man might have come instinctively to Stanley Lieber, who was born in 1922 to Romanian immigrants. Growing up in poverty in the Bronx, Lee gravitated towards books and films before writing obituaries and PR material. When he secured work as a Timely Comics gofer in 1939, he shortened his name for a byline, saving Lieber for his ambition to write The Great American Novel.
