Matt Czuchry swaps being a sharp-suited lawyer in The Good Wife for being a scrubs-wearing doctor in the new US medical drama The Resident, which begins on Universal this week.

Czuchry plays Dr Conrad Hawkins, a third-year resident at the Chastian Park Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. Although talented, he is also arrogant, rude and a rule-breaker.

‘He wants to save every patient, and he’s willing to go up against the system to make it happen,’ says 40-year-old Czuchry.

Conrad’s approach does not endear him to all his colleagues. Idealistic new intern Dr Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal) is assigned to Conrad, who tells him on his first day: ‘Everything you thought you knew about medicine is wrong.’
