The London Marathon marks its 40th anniversary on Sunday by returning to its traditional route – from Blackheath in south-east London to The Mall in its centre – after last year’s spectator-less event was switched to a circuit around St James’s Park, and restricted to elite athletes only.

Gabby Logan will be leading the BBC’s coverage of the race as Ethiopia’s Shura Kitata defends the men’s title he won in 2020 in a thrilling sprint finish, while Kenya’s world record holder Brigid Kosgei goes for a third consecutive win in the women’s race.
