Every month, Stu Warmington puts the spotlight on marching drums

Scottish Pipe Drummer Jim Kilpatrick MBE

We’re a bit closer to home this month, in a country that is synonymous with a certain instrument – the bagpipe. Yep, we’ve arrived in bonny Scotland.

In 1930 the royal Scottish Pipe Band association (then known as Scottish Band association) started the world Pipe Band championships. this is an annual competition held in Glasgow and more commonly referred to now as ‘the worlds’.

Now a two-day event, Pipe Bands compete to win the highly-coveted title of world champions. Like football it is made up of different standards of bands, but instead of leagues these are referred to as Grades with Grade 1 being the Premiership. Bands must win their grades in order to move up to the next. my previous articles have been about a particular group, but I've decided this article needs to focus on an individual. there was only one person who it could possibly be, and that is none other than Jim Kilpatrick MBE.
