LG’s mid-tier model offers object-based audio from a 'bar and sub combo, but is it actually immersive? Steve Withers finds out

LG SP8YA

LG's SPNYA SITS in the middle of the manufacturer's soundbar line, offering many of the features found further up the range, but at a more affordable price. Some of these features are new, and specifically designed to provide greater synergy with its latest TVs.

The specification is largely business-as-usual, with a 3.1.2-channel system based around three forward-firing speaker arrays, a pair of upfirers, and a separate wireless subwoofer. There's also decoding for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, ensuring all those speakers get a thorough workout.

At this point it's time for a little expectation management: any system based around a single 'bar and sub is never going to deliver full 3D sound immersion. You really need speakers behind you (ideally with their own upfiring drivers) to get the most from today's object-based soundtracks. However, you will get a flavour of enveloping sound, and if you simply don't have room for rear speakers then it's no biggie. Also, if at a later date you feel the lack of surrounds is crimping your style, LG sells an optional wireless rear speaker kit for £150.

The SP8YA boasts some fairly impressive audiophile credentials, including processing help from Meridian Audio and support for music files up to 24-bit/192kHz. There's also Chromecast, AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect, plus it works with Alexa and Google Assistant, ensuring no shortage of music choices.
