Truth Or Dare

Cinema is a powerful medium to tell a message to the masses. But the way you tell it, makes a big difference. Producer VINOTH KUMAR, director RAJAPANDI and actor VIJAY VASANTH have put together a tale that combines entertainment and social awareness, taking care not to sound too preachy.

“Our idea is to convey a message subtly. There are no long monologues detailing the moral of the story. But if you look close enough you will find some food for thought,” says director Rajapandi about his second directorial venture ACHAMINDRI, which is to be released by SRI THENANDAL FILMS. Produced by Vinoth Kumar for Triple V Records, the movie has Vijay Vasanth, Samuthirakani and Srushti Dange in the lead. Achamindri boasts of having two National Award winners behind the scenes: KL Praveen, the editor and Poornima R, the costume designer. The support cast includes Saranya Ponvannan, Radha Ravi, Karunas and Vidya Pradeep. “Each character plays a significant role in moving the plot forward. And the actors who play those roles have done a fantastic job,” commends the director as he begins to share his Achamindri journey with KAANCHAN PRASHANTH.

COMING TOGETHER

As the name suggests the movie is a thriller and high on action. “I am a fan of thrillers that bring us to the edge of seat wondering ‘what next’ with some amazing twists in the plot. In my previous movie and in Achamindri I have tried to infuse that quality of thrill and suspense. But at the same time the main plot of the story is an issue that everyone can relate to. Anyone who has a child in a school would have at some point been in this situation and it reflects on holes in the system. Something that the Government needs to look into and rectify,” reveals Rajapandi, without revealing too much! Interestingly, Rajapandi’s maiden movie Ennamo Nadakuthu which received reasonably good reviews, had Vijay Vasanth in the lead. “I honestly believe that Vijay Vasanth is a good actor. He has a lot of potential and in the right hands he will shine. There is a spot for him in Tamil cinema, and he will fill that. It’s just a matter of time.”

Vijay Vasanth who has starred in a few movies is clearly taking it slow, picking his way carefully. What prompted him to work with Rajapandi for the second time? “When we did Ennamo Nadakuthu, I was confident in him and the story. The movie may not have been a huge commercial success, but it did receive positive reviews. And now pretty much the same team has come together again for Achamindri. I just felt we would get it right this time,” says Vijay Vasanth. “It’s a well-written script. Rajapandi is very thorough about every single detail and he won’t settle for anything less. But at the same time he is a very sensible director, in the sense he knows to work within a budget. He knows what market value my films have and works accordingly.”

THE PLOT

The plot involves three key characters who each encounter different problems, that ultimately lead to one villain: the education system. “Vijay Vasanth who plays a pickpocket in the film gets into trouble when he is on a small job. Srushti Dange, who tries to help someone working in her house, meets with some hurdles. And Samuthirakani who is trying to do something for the girl he loves, is faced with many obstacles. All three of them are fighting the same foe. Though in the movie that foe is one person, in reality it is the system,” explains the director, who took inspiration from essays and newspaper articles to write this story. Dialogues for the film are by Radhakrishnan, who worked with Rajapandi in his first film as well. Wanting to get all the facts right, Rajapandi made sure that his writer did enough research on the core subject of the story. “The movie is not a true story, but it is based on true facts. I read articles and essays, and this particular issue caught my attention. From fees related issues to poor infrastructure in schools in rural areas and smaller towns, there a several problems that needs to be addressed. We have tried to address a few such issues in the story,” says the director.
