The Better Sex Workout

You’re in the throes of passion. It’s getting hot and heavy, and you’re expecting some mind-blowing lovemaking. Your heart’s racing, and you can’t seem to catch your breath. No, it’s not the heat of the moment. What you’re experiencing is probably a case of being physically unfit.

If you enjoy vigorous sex on a regular basis, there’s no doubt that you need to get your body ready for action. A workout is said to improve flexibility and strengthen the muscles you need to master any position. “Regular exercise keeps the body in good shape and helps maintain adequate stamina. This helps in better sexual performance as it increases muscle strength, flexibility, and endurance, and ensures that the body is ready for the intense physical vigour required for great sex,” says Dr Sagar Mundada, Mumbai-based consultant psychiatrist and sexologist. “There’s no doubt that a fitter body helps increase sexual confidence. Moreover, a majority of one’s sexual potency depends on the person’s mental state. People who exercise regularly are more confident about their sexual prowess.”

“I used to regularly hit the gym,” says Tina Saxena*, a 27-year-old investment banker from Delhi. “Since I took up my new job, I’ve been under tremendous stress with erratic work hours and left with no time for exercise. I’ve gained weight and my energy levels have gone down to zero. What’s worse, my confidence has taken a hit. I hate my body, and don’t enjoy sex anymore.”
