Not a woman to give up, the only thought Aparna Kumar, 44, swore by as she made her way to the South Pole was, &ldquo;I will die, but not leave.&rdquo; Kumar, currently posted at the Northern Frontier Headquarters of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) in Dehradun, recently became the first Indian Police Service (IPS) and ITBP officer to conquer the southern-most point on the globe situated in Antarctica, a feat, as she puts it, &ldquo;not for the fainthearted&rdquo;. Kumar completed the 111-kilometre expedition over 12 days, battling chilly winds and temperatures ranging from -30&deg;C to -47&deg;C.Kumar&rsquo;s tryst with mountaineering began in 2013, when her colleagues at the battalion she was commanding at Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh), recalled adventures of mountaineers and the thrill the sport brought. &ldquo;I was intrigued by the tales and, out of sheer interest and curiosity, enrolled myself at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports in Manali (Himachal Pradesh). I took the basic mountaineering course, followed it up with an advanced course, and finally, I was climbing peaks by 2014.&rdquo; Until now, she has climbed six prominent peaks across six continents, and aims to scale North America&rsquo;s highest peak Mt Denali in June this year.Ask Kumar about the rigorous routine she followed before the South Pole expedition, and she says, &ldquo;Training included running, pulling tyres, and hitting the gym five days a week. As for the diet, I avoided oily and spicy food, and included chicken, fish, lamb, eggs, veggies, salads, and chapatis in my meals. In addition, I had supplements like protein powder, and vitamin and fish oil tablets.&rdquo;Kumar is also clear that one can never foresee what lies in store once the expedition begins. Thus, the challenges while scaling the South Pole were many. &ldquo;Along with the layers of clothing, I used double-layer mittens that had chemical warmers inside to keep the fingers going. My equipment weighing 35 kg&mdash;the sledge, tents, and clothing&mdash;only added to the woes. Also, just before undertaking the journey, I was diagnosed with pneumonia, so my aim was to avoid falling ill,&rdquo; she says. Antarctica has strict policies about waste management, and one can&rsquo;t leave scrap behind. &ldquo;We were given poo bags to defecate in, and for urinating, we used plastic bottles. These were carried with us at all times,&rdquo; she adds.Back home, her husband, Sanjay Kumar, children Spandana (daughter, 12) and Neelkanth (son, 8), and mother, S Ashwini, are her biggest cheerleaders. While Kumar was away, her mother took over the responsibilities of the house, waiting with bated breath to see her daughter achieve another milestone. &ldquo;My family was delighted when they heard the news. My mother told me, &lsquo;It&rsquo;s getting colder in Dehradun, please come back&rsquo;. What an irony, isn&rsquo;t it?&rdquo;With a string of accomplishments under her belt, Kumar hopes that women, who have access to opportunities, don&rsquo;t waste them, and opines that one must never be afraid of setbacks. &ldquo;I have tried scaling Mt Denali twice before, but failed due to bad weather. It only taught me to prepare better. You will encounter a hundred failures and only a couple of successes in your lifetime. They are worth dying for,&rdquo; she signs off.
