From being considered unsanitary and ‘not an option’, period sex has come a long way to being adventurous. Anushree Kandalkar finds out why the benefits of the act outnumber the perceived disadvantages
You’ve thought about it more than once, and perhaps even discussed it with your friends. You’ve got a firsthand account from one of them, but are still hesitant to try it out. You are wondering whether to broach the topic with your partner at all, and think it’s likely that he’s experiencing similar hesitation. Yes, we’re talking of having sex during your menstrual cycle, when the word ‘period’ itself causes you to hold back. Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t as messy or as ‘no-can-do’ as you make it out to be! For some, the notion that it is not talked about makes it that much more desirable. In this lowdown that we offer, you’ll see that the benefits greatly outweigh the perceived disadvantages. It has been rightly said by relationship counsellors that sex is one of the key ingredients to build and sustain a healthy relationship. Then why should you give it up for a few days every month when you’re both up for it? Here are a few benefits that might provide that slight nudge you need to finally try having ‘bloody’ good sex.
Natural Lube
Vaginal lubrication is vital to sexual arousal, leading to an incredible night of action with your partner. During their period, women generally lose about four to twelve teaspoons of fluid in every cycle, and not all of it is blood. These accompanying fluids along with menstrual blood do the trick. “When my boyfriend and I tried sex during my period, strangely enough, it felt warmer and more intimate. And we had more fun, especially because I didn’t have to take a break to get out the bottle of lube,” shares Ria Sinha*, a 29-year-old communication professional.
