1952 & All That
Essex Life|September 2017

It cannot be denied that the 1950s was a very special chapter in Britain’s exciting history, from its interesting fashion trends to the new era of music and movies. Of course, 1952 was particularly special as the year the first issue of Essex Life’s forerunner, Essex Countryside magazine, was published. Mica Bale reveals some other landmark moments from this treasured time in our county’s history

WARNER & SONS

The Queen’s coronation was a remarkable event in the 1950s and as the Queen prepared to ascend to the throne in 1953, one company in Essex was working throughout the previous year in 1952 to attire Her Majesty for the special day. Warner and Sons was a highly-respected manufacturing company, specialising in silks, with an impressive history that had influenced British fashion as far back as the 17th century. The Braintree based company was no stranger to royal commissions and had already woven the coronation robe for Edward VII as well as providing fabrics and garments for royalty across the globe. It seems there would have been little time for enjoying a read of the brand new edition of Essex Countryside magazine with a cup of tea for staff here!

MALDON TAXI DAY

Although perhaps a little less known, another important event in 1952 was the first ever Maldon Taxi Day, a traditional community event that would gain in popularity and support. Maldon Taxi Day was the brain child of Mr Charles Albert Flemwell, whose idea it was to transport disabled and special needs children from East London to the delights of Maldon. For the first event in 1952, eight kindly taxi drivers volunteered their time to transport the children for a wonderful and rare treat — a day out in Essex. The event attracted more and more attention and today it remains a very special date on the calendar for many.
